Upcoming changes to CustomerService in Google Ads API

The upcoming changes to the CustomerService.CreateCustomerClient method will significantly impact how Google Ads manager accounts create new accounts. Scheduled to take effect on March 17, 2025, these adjustments are designed to tighten policy enforcement and streamline the account creation process.

As a PPC manager, understanding these changes is crucial for maintaining compliance and ensuring smooth campaign execution. With new error codes and quota limits coming into play, preparing your systems is essential to avoid disruptions in your account management workflows.

New Error Codes for Policy Enforcement

To minimize abuse and ensure compliance, Google Ads API v19 will introduce two critical error codes:

  1. PPC managers with manager accounts that do not meet certain spending thresholds or have a required number of active child accounts free from policy violations will receive a CustomerError.CREATION_DENIED_INELIGIBLE_MCC error. To resolve this, ensure compliance with Google policies and achieve the necessary spending levels.
  2. Accounts flagged for policy violations will be unable to create new child accounts, resulting in a CustomerError.CREATION_DENIED_FOR_POLICY_VIOLATION error. Assess your policy compliance to prevent these restrictions.

It’s important to note that earlier API versions will display the ContextError.OPERATION_NOT_PERMITTED_FOR_CONTEXT error for these scenarios.

Quota Limits for Account Creation

The new API will also enforce quota limits on the number of new Google Ads accounts that can be created. If these limits are exceeded, developers will see a QuotaError.RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED error. The retry_delay field in the error details will inform you how long to wait before retrying the API call. Most users will likely find these limits non-problematic, but it’s wise to stay aware of them.

Steps to Adapt to These Changes

PPC managers should take the following steps to update their applications in response to these changes:

  • Review and modify your code to appropriately handle the new error codes introduced in v19.
  • Audit your manager account to verify compliance with Google policies to avoid creation denials.
  • Monitor your quota usage to ensure you remain within the limits for new account creations.

Why This Matters for Your Campaigns

These updates will ensure stricter compliance among PPC accounts, streamlining account creation while reducing the likelihood of policy violations. Adapting to these changes ahead of the rollout can safeguard your campaigns against potential disruptions and maintain the integrity of your account management processes.
